I saw beauty blogger @get_lippie tweet this morning about how she'd thought she'd unsubscribed from Boden but was still receiving emails. A few weeks ago I swear I'd opted down so I wouldn't get so many emails, but I still seem to get quite a lot. Previously I thought I'd opted down to remove Johnnie B and a few other of the options. Upon clicking on the unsub link I was presented with the unsubscribe form….Surely when you click through to such a page, you'd expect the page to show what you're opted in and out of, but this shows neither of the yes/no radio buttons for each of the options to be selected. As mentioned above, I also thought you could opt out of different types of sub-brands newsletter, now there's just a newsletter option. A bit odd. Having hastily disabled all options (yes and where's the "unsubscribe me from all emails" button please?) I think submit my form and was presented with this message: "You have now been removed from our mailing list. Just to warn you, it might take seven to ten days for this information to filter through our systems" 7-10 days???? Unsubscribing should be instant. Obviously you need to pull data from your database before you send out your newsletter, but surely pulling it 10 days ahead is a little….optimistic? Especially when you're sending out an email at least every 2 or 3 days. It doesn't take that long to do if you've already got your sql set up right. In this day and age I consider this to be an unacceptable amount of time to wait to stop receiving emails. (And it seems even when you do with Boden, they'll still send you emails anyway!) Using the excuse "it takes time for it to filter through our systems" is the bullshitter's way of saying your team are a bit lazy. The computer is capable of doing millions of calculations a second and responds to the commands you tell it, when you want it to do it. It does not take 7 days for information to transfer across networks or databases. Lesson here: Speak the truth, don't fob the customers off with silly excuses.
